Last week proved a busy one for IS Assistant Professor Cristian Danescu-Niculescu-Mizil, who gave two keynotes at events associated with the annual Empirical Methods in Natural Language Processing (EMNLP) Conference in Austin, Texas. First, at SocialNLP, he presented “Social Cues in Conversational Dynamics” and then, this past Saturday, he led an NLP and Computational Social Science workshop talk with “Language Norms and Social Dynamics.”
One topic he covered was his latest work on a system for scoring the politeness of requests. Users plug in a question, and depending on the wording, the system lets you know if your language use was polite, impolite or neutral. Check it out for yourselves here.
