“To work in this area, it is important to believe that there is potential to bring about improvements and benefits.”

So says Jon Kleinberg, Tisch University Professor of computer science and information science, in a sweeping, must-read Q&A with the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis on social policy in the age of algorithms. 

“The idea with machine learning algorithms is that there are a lot of problems that we want to solve that we don’t actually know how to write down the rules for. We, as humans, can solve them. But we don’t really know how we solve them.”
