Haijun Xia is an assistant professor in the Cognitive Science, Computer Science & Engineering, and the Design Lab at the University of California, San Diego. He also directs the Creativity Lab. His research area is Human-Computer Interaction, in which he focuses on augmenting our productivity and creativity. He approaches this through the development of novel representations and interaction techniques. He received his Ph.D. from the DGP Lab at the Department of Computer Science, University of Toronto. His work has received in total 7 Best Paper Awards or Honorable Mentions at ACM CHI, UIST, and IEEE VIS conferences. For more of his work, please visit https://creativity.ucsd.edu/
Talk: Achieving Cognitively Direct Human-Computer Interaction

Abstract: Since the dawn of computing, Human-Computer Interaction has been viewed as a communication process between humans and computers, for which the dominant form has been the use of graphical user interfaces coupled with direct manipulation. As my research will show, manipulative directness is often not direct enough. In this talk, I will go over several research themes in my lab that aim to increase the fluidity and efficiency of Human-Computer Interaction, including developing novel representations of user interface elements and employing Natural Language Processing to capture higher-level user intentions.
